Diagnosis, Ethical Issues, and Family Counseling in Teletherapy

Telehealth carries unique ethical challenges, especially when your individual or family client is located in another state. Our training covers the benefits of teletherapy and how you can use it to its full potential. You will learn not only the laws and ethics of teletherapy, but also how to assess, diagnose, and manage sessions with multiple family participants.

This is an Advanced Teletherapy training course is geared for both LPCs and LMFTs in Louisiana with (3)1-hour CEU sessions conducted live by Zoom.

(Hour 1) Teletherapy across State Lines (with individuals, couples, and families)

The session will review the current laws and rules in Louisiana with respect to using Teletherapy when the provider and/or the client is physically located within another state.  Regional state policies will also be discussed, along with emergency situations such as regional weather evacuations and the use of teletherapy. This course will also count as ethics.

 

(Hour 2) Assessment and Diagnosis using Teletherapy

The session will explore the scholarship on conducting assessments and mental status exams using teletherapy.  Participants will gain understanding and experience with diagnosing mental health issues via teletherapy, in both individual and family constellations.  Presenters will discuss risk management strategies in the event of mental health emergencies while using teletherapy. This course will count as Assessment and Diagnosis.

 

(Hour 3) Managing Family Teletherapy sessions

Teletherapy with multiple concurrent participants presents several distinct challenges and opportunities.  This session will explore these concepts, and identify skills for managing multiple participants in teletherapy, who may either be together in person on one device or apart from each other on multiple devices.  Examples will also include managing play, family, and couples therapy scenarios. This course will credit as general MFT.

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Roy A. Salgado, Jr., LMFT-S, LPC-S, NCC

Dr. Roy A. Salgado, Jr., LMFT-S, LPC-S, NCC received his B.S. in Psychology from Tulane University in 1995. He received his Master’s degree in Counseling in 2000 and Ph.D. in Counselor Education in 2003 from the University of New Orleans. Dr. Salgado has also worked as a teacher for the Archdiocese of New Orleans School System. In addition to his teaching experience, he has had diverse experiences as a counselor at an elementary school, a high school, a child and adolescent youth ranch, a community agency, and in private practice. Dr. Salgado has a position as an Associate Professor of Counseling and Behavioral Sciences at Our Load of Holy Cross College where he has been on faculty teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels since 2006.

 

 

Dr. Matt Morris, LPC-S, LMFT-S

Dr. Matt Morris, LPC-S, LMFT-S has a Ph.D. specializing in Family Therapy from Virginia Tech. He is licensed as both a Professional Counselor (LPC) and Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Louisiana and has more than a decade of experience in counseling families. Dr. Morris is a Board-approved supervisor to counselors and therapists and is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. Dr. Morris is also a Professor of Counseling at the University of Holy Cross where he trains counselors, studies families, reads a lot, and generally has a great time doing what he loves.

 

 

 

 

This program is being offered in cooperation with the University of Holy Cross. The University of Holy Cross has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 4268.
